Signs Your Dog Needs a Dental Cleaning

If you own a dog, you probably understand the importance of regular dental care for their overall health. Our veterinarians in Ketchum discuss the reasons and timing for cleaning your dog's teeth and the signs indicating that it may be time to schedule professional dental care for your pet.

Do dogs need their teeth cleaned?

Do dogs need a regular dental cleaning? The answer is absolutely!

A dental cleaning for your dog may include a thorough examination, teeth cleaning, and polishing to remove tartar and plaque that causes periodontal disease. This will have to be done while your dog is under general anesthesia.

Once your dog is anesthetized, your veterinarian will examine your pup's mouth for abnormalities. A dental probe will be used to detect any bleeding in the gums and periodontal pockets, which can collect food and cause tooth decay if not properly treated.

What are the signs of dental problems in dogs?

The following are some of the most common signs of dental problems in dogs:

  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Discolored or yellowing teeth
  • Receding and/or bleeding gums (gingivitis)
  • Drooling (more than average)
  • Loose or missing teeth
  • Poor appetite
  • Sneezing and nasal discharge (from an abscess that breaks into the nasal passages)

How to Tell When Your Dog Needs a Dental Cleaning

An easy way to tell if your dog needs a teeth cleaning is by looking at their teeth. A dog's teeth will show a buildup of plaque. If you notice some plaque buildup or gingivitis in your dog's mouth, it's probably time for a dental exam and cleaning.

These issues will only get worse if they aren't addressed early on, and they can lead to serious sensitivity in the teeth and gums, along with other oral health problems, for your dog.

When should I get my dog's teeth cleaned?

You should clean your dog's teeth once a year, though this may vary depending on the breed. Certain dog breeds require more frequent dental cleanings, so consult your veterinarian to see how often your dog should have his mouth cleaned.

During a dental cleaning, your pet will be sedated for your and the staff's safety. The veterinarian will first perform X-rays to determine if there are any underlying issues.

What You Can Do at Home

It's important to brush your dog's teeth at home regularly. The more often you do it, the better, but even brushing two or three times a week will help maintain their dental health. As your dog gets used to the routine, brushing their teeth daily will become easier.
